While the Red Sox made it official Wednesday afternoon that they had signed pitcher Joe Nelson to a one-year guaranteed minor-league deal with a invite to big-league camp, the veteran reliever was in the midst of carpool duty, taking his daughter and friends to ballet class.
In less than two weeks, the 35-year-old right-hander will be back in a Red Sox uniform as he attempts to fight for a spot in an already stacked bullpen in Boston.

John Boggs, the agent for Padres slugger Adrian Gonzalez, tells SignOnSanDiego.com, the Web site of the San Diego Union-Tribune, that San Diego ownership can't afford Gonzalez:
"I don't ever want to speak for ownership because I have no knowledge of what they have and what they don't. (But) the feeling we're getting is more than likely (the Padres) are going to have to trade Adrian Gonzalez because (they) can't afford him."
