The Cubs Need More Jeff Samardzijas, Not Less and Other News...

Theo Epstein would like Jeff Samardzija to stay with the Cubs. Jed Hoyer reiterated this week the Cubs need more Jeff Samardzijas on the team, not less. And Jeff Samardzija would like to stay with the team he has a lot invested in. But the two sides remain apart on a long term extension for […]The post The Cubs Need More Jeff Samardzijas, Not Less and Other News from Spring Training appeared first on Chicago Cubs Online.

Renteria playing it coy regarding Opening Day starter

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Jeff Samardzija said Wednesday he was getting himself ready this spring for Opening Day. Travis Wood on Thursday pitched as if he is ready right now for Opening Day. And Rick Renteria — well, the Cubs’ manager still won’t rule out 18-game loser Edwin Jackson or likely DL candidate Jake Arrieta for the first-day honor. “I don’t want to lock myself in,” the manager said. “We still have to see how everybody’s still falling in and staying healthy and things of that nature.” Of cour

Cubs prospects grateful to Bill Buckner for his help

MESA, Ariz. — Kris Bryant had a vague idea of the history behind his new hitting coach when he got his first pro assignment out of rookie camp in Mesa last summer. But only because his dad, Mike — a former Boston Red Sox farmhand — had vivid memories of former batting champion Bill Buckner. “He was like, ‘Oh, you’re hitting coach is Bill Buckner,’ ” Kris said. “My dad grew up in the Boston area, so he was always a Red Sox fan. He was definitely one of his favorites.” The year Mike Bryant was dra

Is Veras keeping the mound warm for Strop?

The Cubs are hoping for a little peace and quiet, in addition to saves, from the closer's role this year. After a bumpy ride last year, which saw the Cubs go from Carlos Marmol to Kyuji Fujikawa to Kevin Gregg in the ninth inning, they acquired veteran Jose Veras to do the job this year.

A Swing And A Miss! (Cubs Song Contest Finale)

WGN has picked three finalists for their Cubs radio song contest, and BCB's Danny Rockett and his crowdsourced rock tune is NOT one of them. What song will you be hearing 162 times this year before every Cubs broadcast? It's up to you to vote! As a Cubs fan, I'm used to disappointment. As a musician, writer, and actor, I'm used to getting and losing gigs for arbitrary reasons that I don't understand. Thus, I was completely unsurprised when BCB's crowdsourced WGN Cubs song did not make the

Wood sharp, goes 3 shutout innings, Cubs still fall

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Travis Wood gave up one hit and struck out three in three scoreless innings Thursday as the Cubs fell to the Cleveland Indians 1-0.Wood, an All-Star in 2013, had his first scheduled start rained out last Saturday.Indians starter Justin Masterson gave up three hits and a walk, striking out three in three shutout innings.Masterson worked himself into a bases-loaded jam in the first by giving up one-out hits to Donnie Murphy and Anthony Rizzo and walking Nate Schierholtz. Wood not worried about Opening Day assignment

Travis Wood and Jeff Samardzija have been the two constants in the Cubs' rotation the last two seasons, and the pair appear to be the front-runners for the Opening Day assignment. They're just going about their business as usual.

Wood sharp in spring debut as Cubs fall in shutout

Travis Wood made his spring debut in the 1-0 loss to the Indians on Thursday, turning in three scoreless innings and finishing with three strikeouts, no walks and one hit allowed.

Bonifacio an early hit in the Cubs' clubhouse

Emilio Bonifacio was one of the last players added to the Cubs' roster, signing a Minor League contract on Feb. 15, and he's been the center of attention in the clubhouse in his neon-colored clothing, chatting non-stop with the other Latin players.

Baez's bat generates buzz around Cubs' camp

Javier Baez lay on the ground for a few seconds after fouling a ball off his left ankle on Wednesday, but stayed in the game. In his next at-bat, he hit an opposite-field home run. Guess he was feeling OK.

Renteria optimistic about Soler's progress

Jorge Soler was hitless in five Cactus League at-bats but Cubs manager Rick Renteria has seen a lot of positives from the Cuban outfielder in practice.

Minor League Camp Notes: Jimenez, Paniagua, Concepcion, Dunston,...

Eloy Jimenez is huge, Juan Paniagua is present, and Gerardo Concepcion is still in the organization. Much more.

Indians 1, Cubs 0: Pitching, Pitching, Pitching

The Cubs pitched well today. The Indians pitched just a bit better. SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- It was cloudy in the Valley of the Sun Thursday afternoon, with a few sprinkles in the area, a good day to sit inside and listen to Len and Mick call the game, instead of making the long rid out to Goodyear. I've got to be a bit selective about the away games I'm attending this year, being here for the full month of spring-training games. 35 games in 35 days is... well, it's a lot. So I'll be skipping

Sweeney bringing renewed relentlessness to outfield

Ryan Sweeney joined the Cubs last April 3, signing a Minor League deal after he was released by the Red Sox. The left-handed hitting outfielder was promoted on May 6, and batted .266 in 70 games.

Cubs vs. Indians at Goodyear Preview, Thursday 3/6, 2:05 CT

The Cubs make their first trip to the western edges of the Phoenix area this afternoon. SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- It's rather cloudy in the Valley of the Sun today, although no rain is in the forecast, so the Cubs and Indians will proceed with their game, which I will be listening to online with all of you. Here's a random thought I had when I heard the Cubs had signed Casper Wells to a minor-league deal with a NRI. Last June 28, Wells pitched the ninth inning for the White Sox in a 19-10 blowout

Convalescence Watch: Arrieta, Castro, Russell, Olt

Arrieta is feeling good after throwing off the mound, and Russell isn't worried about his dead arm.

Sammy Sosa: When is He Coming Back? Is There a Market Advantage?...

Tom Ricketts recently spoke about the former Cubs star. Is it finally time to mend fences? Is there some value there?

Know Your Enemy: Tampa Bay Rays

The Cubs and Rays have made some recent trades, but have rarely played each other. The Tampa Bay Rays (along with the Oakland Athletics) are the poster children for "How to succeed in baseball without a huge payroll." The Rays, after a decade of bad expansion-team play, have now had six straight winning seasons and been in the postseason four of those years, with a World Series appearance. We'd take that... right? This year's Rays will again be in the playoff conversation. This could be the

So Many Players and So Little Time and Other Bullets

There isn't a main Bullet today, as far as I can tell. Just a lot of players to discuss.

Cub Tracks Is Ready For Ted

Welcome back, Mr. Lilly. Your attitude is set to be a welcome addition. In other news, Tom Ricketts talks about a wide variety of subjects, including winning, Sammy, and gay players in MLB. Prospect buzz is getting turned to "11" and Gordo goes back to Ryan Theriot's gauntlet. Weird mix today. See what you think. From Comcast SportsNet (Video) Rick Renteria talks about his early impressions of the Cubs' pitching staff. Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus is drooling over the Cubs' prospects.

No good reason to keep Sosa away

Tom Ricketts was asked on the radio what he called "a really good question." The really good answer would have been that he'll invite Sammy Sosa back into the Cubs' family.
