The Providence jump ball; Gardner's shot; and what Buzz Williams...

Jake Thomas has avoided looking at replays of the jump ball with which he was involved in the last eight seconds of the 81-80 double-overtime loss at Providence on Tuesday night.

MU Hosts St. John's Saturday At 11 a.m. CT

The Marquette University men's basketball team (17-13, 9-8 BIG EAST) wraps up the regular season Saturday morning at 11 a.m. CT when the squad hosts St. John's (19-11, 9-8 BIG?EAST) at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Four Factors: Marquette at Providence

Derrick Wilson's foul didn't cost Marquette this game. Neither did Todd Mayo's two fouls against three point shooters. It's much more simple than that. If you're not familiar with the Four Factors as featured on KenPom.com, the concept is very simple: There are four main parts of a basketball game that contribute to a team's success. They are: effective field goal percentage, or FG% with a bonus for made three pointers turnover rate, or the % of possessions that end in a turnover off

Badalato, Baas Earn Awards From The Big East

One slightly more impressive than the other, but both still important for both programs. As we've discussed before, it's important for both of Marquette's lacrosse teams to show signs of improvement this season, even if it doesn't translate into wins. A easily recognizable way of seeing this improvement is to earn weekly awards from the Big East, as this is the first official year in the conference for both teams. This week, both teams had an honoree. In men's lacrosse, Bryan Badolato was

3.6 Championship "Week" Watch

Two conferences continue, and three conferences get started! It occurs to me that following Marquette's loss to Providence on Tuesday night, we need to be giving particular attention to the status of all of the #1 seeds in the conference tournaments that will likely only earn one bid to the NCAA tournament. All regular season champions earn a guaranteed slot in the NIT if they do not win their conference tournament. There are only 32 slots in the NIT and potentially 21 #1 seeds that could som

Katherine Plouffe Named Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year

In addition, Marquette's senior star was a unanimous choice for the All-Big East First Team! The reconstituted Big East is going to take some getting used to for those of us who are attempting to discuss all of the team sports in the conference. As things have been going on this season, I've attempted to give you predictions as to who would earn the postseason award for the various sports. With the Big East women's basketball tournament not starting until Saturday night, I figured I had a l

Down For The Count: Providence 81, Marquette 80 (2 OT)

After gamely battling back from double-digit deficits, YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles came up just short in their attempt to swipe a road win against Providence, and now all that's left is to find out where we're headed when the NIT brackets are released in 10 days. I would like to be impressed with Marquette's hard-fought, close-but-no-cigar loss to Providence at the Dunkin Donuts Center last night. I'd like to laud the team for valiantly battling back after being down double digits in both t

3.5 Championship "Week" Watch

Four tournaments are going on today, and GET EXCITED: we have daytime basketball in the Big South! We've got three tournaments getting started and a return to action in the Patriot League going on today. The Big South has a full day of action, as they play their entire tournament at Coastal Carolina, while the NEC has their quarterfinals at campus sites and the Ohio Valley plays a nighttime double header for their first round as a part of their staggered entry tournament in Nashville. All of t

A look at the season

Providence, R.I. - Marquette still has one regular-season game to play, at home on Saturday against St. John's.

Providence Outlasts Marquette In 2OT 81-80

Bryce Cotton hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds remaining in double overtime to lift Providence to a critical 81-80 victory over Marquette Tuesday night.

Loss in double overtime likely seals Marquette's fate

Time may have run out on Marquette’s season Tuesday night. Leading by three points with 27.9 seconds left in double overtime, the Golden Eagles fell, 81-80, to Providence.

Wildcats ride a sizzling streak

A trip to Pennsylvania and a sound thrashing from Villanova earned the Marquette women something that probably doesn’t sound too appealing right now — a rematch Sunday with the Wildcats.

Women's Basketball: Villanova 81, Marquette 64

WELP Emily Leer scored Villanova's first four baskets of the game, and by that point, it was 12-6 in favor of the Wildcats.  After a breather on the bench, Leer came back for the last nine and a half minutes of the game and hit another four shots.  When Leer came back into the game, Villanova had a six point advantage.  By the time she hit her last shot of the half, the Wildcats led by 21, and only a Katherine Plouffe layup as the clock dwindled to zero pushed it back under 20 at the break. Lee

Going to need a big finish here. When: Tuesday, March 4, at 6pm CentralWhere: The Pavilion in Villanova, PAAudio/Visual: Villanova hates you, so you'll have to pay for streaming video. Live stats will be here.Twitter Updates: @MarquetteWBB December 31, 2013. From that point on, the Coyer sisters, Katherine and Caroline would outscore

Four Factors: Marquette at Villanova

Really, the first half was pretty good. A lousy second half is largely responsible for a lot of terrible final statistics here. If you're not familiar with the Four Factors as featured on KenPom.com, the concept is very simple: There are four main parts of a basketball game that contribute to a team's success. They are: effective field goal percentage, or FG% with a bonus for made three pointers turnover rate, or the % of possessions that end in a turnover offensive rebound rate, or the %

3.4 Championship "Week" Watch

We're off and rolling! Of course, because the Patriot League plays every game as a home game for the higher seed, they'll be taking today off as Lafayette and Colgate regroup from last night's wins and head out for their quarterfinal games tomorrow. Today, we get the start of two more tournaments, and yet again, all of the games are being streamed online somewhere for free. Isn't the 21st century great? All times are Central, natch. ATLANTIC SUN QUARTERFINALS 6pm: #8 Stetson (7-23) at #1 F

3.4 Around The Big East

The hell happened here? Seton Hall 71, Xavier 62 - Earth to Xavier, please come in Xavier. All due respect to Seton Hall, but the Musketeers took all of the NCAA tournament goodwill that they earned on Saturday by beating Creighton and flushed it down the toilet here. Maybe it won't end up costing them - SB Nation's own Chris Dobbertean had Xavier as a 10 seed before the game - but this is definitely a bad result for Xavier. Now, there is the issue of Matt Stainbrook leaving this game with a

Coming Up Small: #6 Villanova 73, Marquette 56

In the season's last opportunity to score a marquee victory, Marquette fails to show up. Well at least we don't have to hear about Marquette's "bubble chances," or its "tournament resume," or "being in position to be in position," or any of that anymore. If MU really wanted to make a last gasp run at playing their way back into the NCAA Tournament conversation, they HAD to win a tough road game at Villanova this past Sunday. But instead of rising to the occasion, YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles

Marquette will face a determined Providence

Earlier this season after Marquette beat Providence for the eighth straight time at home, Friars coach Ed Cooley was emphatic about the rematch in Providence.
