No.12 Michigan had just produced the best half of its season against Illinois, a 52-point barrage on the Fighting Illini's home floor, capped by Nik Stauskas' 25-foot dead-eye buzzer-beating three-pointer, complete with a stare at the taunting student section. Seeking a statement while playing to seal the outright Big Ten title, even the placid Beilein was overwhelmed.

Michigan had two chances, not one, to clinch the outright Big Ten championship, with a home game against Indiana still on the schedule, and Illinois - despite having shown recent improvement - weren't the '89 Flyin' Illini. It was clear early in Tuesday's contest the game with the Hoosiers would be the gravy. The Wolverines suffocated the Illini early, bombing triples from everywhere and playing like a team on a mission in an 84-53 win.

Pick one guy from any past Michigan team and give him to John Beilein for a year - who would you take?

This is the result of years that Beilein has built with a philosophy of talent combined with - but not at the expense of - character. 'It's just a good group of kids, low maintenance to no maintenance,' said Horford, one of three captains. 'You're not going to run into much drama.'
