Yanks announce extra spring training invitees

The Yankees announced today they extended 20 spring training invitations to players outside of the 40-man roster. For full descriptions of all the players, check out Trenton Thunder beat reporter Mike Ashmore’s blog. Catchers Kyle Higashioka Jesus Montero P.J. New York Yankees add another outfielder to the mix, sign Marcus...

Marcus Thames agreed Monday to a minor league contract with the Yankees, who also finalized a $1.1 million, one-year deal with Randy Winn to give themselves more left field options.

Yankees invite 20 non-roster players

For those who don’t know the term, a non-roster player in spring training is anyone not on the 40-man, so this list includes both organizational minor leaguers and new players signed to minor league deals. Every player on the 40-man will also be in big league camp. Here’s the press release, with no huge surprises. The New York [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Yankees make Randy Winn signing official; add Marcus Thames in minor league deal

Yanks add Thames for outfield competition

The Yankees signed added Marcus Thames to a non-roster contract to compete with Brett Gardner, Randy Winn and Jamie Hoffmann for the final outfield spot, according to SI’s Jon Heyman. This is not the first time Thames has been with the Yankees, as he was drafted by them in 1996 and homered on the first pitch he saw in the Majors against Randy Johnson. Here are his career stats.

Heyman: Yankees sign Thames

Jon Heyman is reporting that the Yankees have signed Marcus Thames. Nothing official, but I have to assume this is a minor league deal. Brian Cashman has said several times that he would like to add a right-handed hitting outfielder, and this could be exactly the addition he’s been looking for. Good competition in big league [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

State of the Yankees: Catcher

I leave for Tampa in eight days. Several players, including Derek Jeter, are already working out at the Yankees complex. Pitchers and catchers officially report next week. We’re almost there, everyone. Just hold tight a few more days! This is hardly a unique idea, but this seems to be a good time to take a daily look [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

So, what did I miss?

At some point in the past four months, I got used to writing about baseball every day. Taking seven days off felt … odd. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the time off, but it took a few days to break the habit of constantly checking email and Twitter and various corners of the Internet. Now that I’m [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Derek Jeter's Contract Status

Amidst what has been a busy offseason for the Yankees, the topic of Derek Jeter's contract status seems to have gone to the backburner.  Perhaps it's simply because everyone assumes that a deal will be worked out as it's practically...

Poll Results: Fans expect big impact from Vazquez

My latest poll shows Yankees fans are forgiving Javier Vazquez for his wretched second half and postseason performance in 2004. This might be explained by Vazquez revealing he was in fact injured in the second half at his press conference on Dec. 22. “In the second half, my arm didn’t feel as good as it did in the first half, and it was really the first time in my career, and really the only time in my career, that I felt my arm wasn’t where it’s supposed to be. I started getting trea

Bill Buckner Featured Card of the Week

Everyone’s favorite Red Sox player is this week’s featured card of the week. In the 1986 World Series against the Mets, Bill Buckner let Mookie Wilson’s chopper to first trickled under his glove and the Mets went on to take the World Series. Buckner was the man every Red Sox fan blamed for continuing the “Curse of the Bambino.” Until the Sox finally broke the “Curse” in 2004, Buckner was a name nobody in New England wanted to hear. Yankees fans used the name to their advant

Pinch hitting: Jesse Ghiorzi

Next up in the Pinch Hitters series is Jesse Ghiorzi, who searched through baseball to put together a team of familiar faces. Jesse grew up in Westchester County, lives in Ohio and tries to make it home for two or three games at The Stadium every year (he also catches four or five games on the road). And now, on to baseball

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably battling a little bit of a stomachache and/or heartburn right now but feeling all the same that it was worth it. I hope everyone had a great time with family/friends/whomever during the game, and congrats to the Saints for pulling off a terrific comeback. I’m not a huge Sean [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Do you think the Yankees will win the Super Bowl?

It’s amazing what the Internet can bring us sometimes. …sometimes… I agree with Frankie B.

Official Super Beauxl Menu Thread

Today is, obviously, a great day for football fans but it’s also a great day for those of us who like to eat (and, I suppose, those of us who like commercial with Clydesdale horses). Anyway, I’m rooting for the Saints today – I’ve had occasion to be in New Orleans several times since Katrina and [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Yankees at the Super Bowl?

Tonight’s the biggest night of sports on television. The Super Bowl is being held in Miami this year, and although the Yankees haven’t reported for Spring Training yet, I’m betting there will be some World Champions at the scene. I know Derek Jeter has a new mansion in Tampa, but that’s four hours away from Miami. Of course, I’ll be watching and posting about any glimpses of Yankees in the stands. News updates: Yankees haven’t made any moves for the Major League roster

A question with no answer

Several times this week we’ve tried to compare players from different generations, almost always with frustrating results. Attempting to liken one player’s accomplishments (and the challenges he faced) with another’s from an entirely different era is the height of subjectivity; everyone has a different opinion on what corresponds fairly. Now John, despite being a Saybrook man [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Pinch hitting: John Ettinger

Now batting in our Pinch Hitters series is John Ettinger, who wrote in appreciation of a broken record. A sophomore economics major at Yale — “and a proud member of Saybrook College,” he wrote — John grew up in New York City and hopes to one day write public economic policy. Although he worked last summer as an intern [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...
