Come see the trophy

After returning home from its trip to Asia, the  World Series trophy will be on display this Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Westchester County Center. Admission is free, display hours are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and fans will be allowed to take pictures with the trophy. I’m sure it will be a mob [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Voices in our heads

For most of us, the connection to baseball comes through the voices of others – specifically TV or radio announcers. Those people who tell and describe and inform are our way into the games and the people and the stories. It’s not surprising that fans are so particular (and critical) about the broadcasters of the [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Joba wants to start, willing to relieve

The New York Post had a couple items on the looming Joba/Hughes decision today.First up: Mike Puma spoke with Joba Chamberlain at the Thurman Munson awards dinner last night.Joba on being a starter:"I made 31 starts last year, and hopefully I'll make the same and get about 200 innings," Chamberlain said. "As a competitor, you want to be out there every fifth day [starting]. I want that opportunity. I have to go out and prove it, and I nderstand that. I like it that way." Joba on being a relieve

Everybody’s favorite target

So, apparently the fascination with the Yankees payroll crosses over a variety of sports lines. In one of the more bizarre pseudo-rips of the Yankees free-spending ways (and Brian Cashman), Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti – yup, an NFL owner – said this at a press conference today (tip of the hat to good friend [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Can you name all the 2009 Yankees?

If you’ve never heard of Sporcle, you may consider killing me after clicking that link. It is the ultimate procrastination tool. Sporcle is a trivia quiz Web site that can trip you up on anything from sports to geography. I found this quiz today (via this comical Yankees blog) and I thought I’d share it with the rest of you. It’s question: Can you name the players who appeared in at least one game for the New York Yankees during the 2009 season? I can! … on my second try…

The new guy in town

Some of you may remember Randy Winn from his time with the (then) Devil Rays, particularly Oct. 3, 1999 – when he hit an inside-the-park grand slam off Jeff Juden. You don’t see that everyday. Eleven years later, Winn is now a member of the Yankees and he got on the phone with a west coast [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Saturday Night Lights

Although the Fox network normally runs its Saturday package of games in the afternoon, there will be (at least) two primetime games on Saturday this year and – not surprisingly – the Yankees will be part of both of them. On May 22 (when the Yankees play the Mets) and on June 26  (when they play [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

A second half to remember

As I was reading the guest post from the 6-pound Boys this morning, I found myself pausing over the part where they used CC Sabathia’s impact on the Brewers in 2008 as the prime example of a trade deadline smash. So, since I’m not bogged down today discussing The Show That Everyone Watched Last Night, [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Report: Tigers 'not Close' To Signing Damon

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski says the team is not close to signing Johnny Damon despite claims from the outfielder's agent that he wants to play there. Dombrowski told the Detroit News yesterday, "We're not close to making any kind of deals at this point." The newspaper says, "It...

'a Perfect Fit': Winn Ready To Get Going With Yankees

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Randy Winn believes his versatility makes him a good addition to the Yankees, and he's eager to get started with the reigning World Series champions come spring training. "They're the World Series champions from last year and I have a chance to compete and...

Pinch hitting: 6 Pound, 8 Ounce Baby Joba

Next up in the Pinch Hitters series are Conor Cashel and Kevin Seefried, who looked into the future to find possible deadline additions who could help the Yankees this season. From the About page of their blog, 6 Pound 8 Ounce Baby Joba: ”At the age of 5, Conor Cashel and Kevin Seefried became die-hard Yankee fans. [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this blog post ...

Joba Chamberlain - Reliever or Starter? (revisited)

It's no secret that my preference is that Phil Hughes be given the starter's role and Joba be setup man to Mariano Rivera....

Joba Wouldn't Pitch Fit Over Shift To Yankees' Relief

Joba the starter is open to becoming Joba the reliever, especially if the Yankees want to groom him as Mariano Rivera's heir apparent. Speaking to reporters last night before the annual Thurman Munson awards dinner in Manhattan, Joba Chamberlain reiterated comments he made to The Post on Saturday, when...

Expect Set-up Role & Phil To Be Starter

It was impossible to ignore, and the Yankees didn't ignore it. Words were not needed. Joba Chamberlain's body language screamed confidence and the scoreboard flashed 97 mph. Here at the end of his most taxing season, Chamberlain was a strutting fire-breather again. In the postseason. As a reliever...
