Vols miss some players for spring practice

Tennessee junior receiver Alton 'Pig' Howard won't return for the Vols' spring practice season that begins Friday.

When Tennessee opens its second spring practice under head coach Butch Jones on Friday, the Vols will be without a couple of scholarship players. As we indicated last week in our wide receiver preview and in the war room, Alton "Pig" Howard is on a leave of absence from the team. Also, senior to be defensive tackle Greg Clark has decided to call it a career.

Never mind the perfect start through ten games or the looming weekend series on the road at college baseball powerhouse Arizona State. Tennessee isn't overlooking one-win La Salle. Will Maddox and Jeff Moberg each drove in three runs, Christin Stewart and Scott Price added solo home runs and A.J. Simcox drove in two more as the Vols stayed undefeated with a 14-0 win over La Salle Tuesday night, the first of a two-game midweek series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Spring preview: The defensive backs [$]

A year ago, the Vol secondary made some game changing plays. They also at times struggled with their lack of speed and they were not nearly as effective in extra defensive back packages. This spring, finding a nickelback is a key goal for the secondary as competition in the defensive backfield grows along with the speed as well.

SEC Women's Tournament Preview
